Women’s Entrepreneurship Day – Kosovo

wed01Women’s Entrepreneurship Day is a global event celebrated in 144 countries. This year for the first time in Kosovo, Mrs.Mirlinda Kusari Purrini, SHE-ERA’s Founder/Executive Director was selected the WED ambassador to represent our country. The WED event was organized under the Patronage of the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Her Excellency Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga who declared that “…this year we celebrate on a special day on the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day the importance of recognizing the role of gender perspective in the development of our economies, focusing our attention towards women entrepreneurs whose vision has created lasting impacts in our country as they did worldwide”. This event which was held at the Swiss Diamond Hotel with around 130 participants and more than 20 guest speakers brought together top female leaders, international Ambassadors, CEO’s, celebrities, media personalities and politicians, gathered to offer their support and encouragement to women in business. Mrs. Mirlinda Kusari Purrini (WED Ambassador) addressed the welcoming remarks where she stated that: “Women’s Entrepreneurship Day is an international movement which will continue throughout the year to provide support to women entrepreneurs in each continent. The main purpose of WED is the empowerment of women in business and the creation of “think tank” groups with women leaders to encourage the business expansion through positive initiatives in a global and national level”.  She also shared the mission of WED which is to celebrate, empower and promote women entrepreneurs at a global level and offer support to women owned businesses.   Mr. Uranik Begu (Global Entrepreneurship Week – National Host) announced the importance of having the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day organized for the first time in Kosovo within the Global Entrepreneurship Week and the positive impact it would have to Kosovar women entrepreneurs.

wed02The panels were moderated by Mrs. Xheraldina Vula, Co-founder and Deputy Director of Company21 in Kosovo and Mrs. Luljeta Vuniqi the Executive Director of Kosovar Gender Studies Center.  Each panel was assigned one of the official WED pledges: Treasure, Talent and Time so every panelist would provide success stories and the challenges businesswomen face along the road building a sustainable business.

The Norwegian Ambassador, Mr. Braathu and  the Dutch Ambassador, Mr. Bosch claimed that it was important to facilitate and increase the trade and business cooperation between companies and institutions from the Netherlands and their counterparts in Kosovo and search for cooperation opportunities. Aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women, were encouraged to register their properties which would enable them to have access to finances and widen the perspective of opportunities. The GIZ representative disclosed the program Për të Mirën Tonë the objective of which is to emphasize the importance of land ownership for women and registering the joint property. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development revelaed the launch of the four-year program where 200 businesses of women entrepreneurs in Kosovo will be supported through grants, advice and co-finance credits. Also, Mr. Celina from the TEB Bank mentioned their cooperation with SHE-ERA to provide assistance and financial support to young entrepreneurs and women in agriculture.

wed04The panels were followed by a networking lunch the objective of which was to offer the participants the opportunity to link developing partners with young women entrepreneurs.  Gender issues remain a controversial topic in Kosovo. The economic climate is not very favorable to women entrepreneurs especially to young businesses. Starting on December 3rd,2014 the WomenWOW movement will begin to help drive, celebrate and support women-owned businesses, organizations and causes worldwide and also bring awareness to all the amazing organizations and women owned companies that need our support!

The WED Kosovo Ambassador Mrs.Kusari Purrini throughout this day and during the whole year aims to provide support and promote women in business because they are a vital part of our country’s economy.
